In 1938 Elton Schram of Belmont, California, noticed his neighbor stranded on the road with a dead motor. He offered to give him a tow, but had only two small ropes. The only other sturdy item in his trunk was a pair of Levi’s® jeans. He attached the ropes to the jean and voila — the pants became towing togs:
