Our Fab Favorites asks Levi Strauss & Co. insiders for the lowdown on their top picks from the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives.
Levi Strauss & Co. Historian Tracey Panek caught up with Jamila Hubbard, senior manager, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, to learn about one of her favorite pieces from our Archives: Lauryn Hill’s ensemble from her Miseducation of Lauryn Hill tour in 1999, which was sponsored by the Levi’s® brand.
Jamila described how important the album was in her life. She had just moved out of her parents’ house and was attending college in San Francisco. “That album really brought together some of my closest girlfriends at the time,” she said. “It inspired us and was a big part of my development into being a woman, setting boundaries, loving myself and having stronger self-esteem. … It was one of those pivotal albums in your life.”
To this day, Jamila still reflects on one of her favorite lines from one of the album’s biggest hits, “Do Wop (That Thing)” – Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem. “I’ve used that personally as a reminder to hold my head high and not settle for something I didn’t really want, and I’ve shared that with friends many, many times over the years.”
