A Perfect HRC Equality Index Score – 19 Years and Counting

Levi Strauss & Co.
January 31, 2022

For the 19th consecutive year, Levi Strauss & Co. has received top marks from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation – the educational arm of America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBTQIA+ people – on their Corporate Equality Index. The index is a national benchmarking tool that recognizes organizations that practice LGBTQIA+ equality in:

  • Culture & Engagement
  • Corporate & employee policies
  • Learning & Development
  • Transgender Benefits & Wellness
  • Domestic Partner Coverage
  •
LS&Co. joins more than 840 major companies in 2022 that received the highest CEI ranking—a perfect score of 100—earning us the designation as one of the Best Places to Work for LGBTQIA+ Equality.

“LS&Co. has been a vocal proponent of LGBTQIA+ equality for so long that I think it would be easy sometimes for us to rest on our laurels, so I’m always most proud when I see us recommitting ourselves to staying ahead of the curve,” said Beckett Doyle, co-lead of LS&Co.’s LGBTQIA+ U.S.-based employee resource group Inside Out.

The impressive score from the CEI – highlighting 1,271 businesses’ 2022 equality policies – comes at a time when we are advancing our diversity programming and operations to enhance our employee’s experience.

We recently completed our first Global Self Identification (GSID) campaign in the U.S., adding two new categories of sexual orientation and identity. We’ve found that 319 individuals who participated in GSID identified as part of our LGBTQIA+ community – important data that will allow us to better tailor programs and benefits for this sector of our employee population.

At LS&Co., we’re continuing to expand our global employee resource groups (ERGs), which include our LGBTQIA+ ERGs Inside Out, here in the U.S., and Unlabeled out of Europe. These ERGs help to create safe spaces for our employees and foster authentic connections.

When it comes to advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community, our recent efforts include:

  • Rejoining a Texas Compete business statement supporting the inclusion of common-sense LGBTQIA+ protections in nondiscrimination laws in the state of Texas
  • Providing philanthropic support to Freedom for All Americans’ Campaign to Win advocacy efforts to pass the Equality Act
  • Renewing our support of HRC’s Youth Ambassador Program, which helps amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ advocates as they address the most pressing issues facing their communities. We also renewed our support of HRC’s Transgender Justice Initiative that builds capacity for transgender and non-binary BIPOC community advocates and organizers.

We’re committed to doing our part to call out discrimination in any form. To learn more, read HRC’s full CEI report.
