To impact democracy, you need to understand how it works. That’s why it’s more important than ever to create the next generation of active citizens who will address the issues of our time – the future literally depends on it.
In line with our company’s values, Levi Strauss & Co. is joining forces with education powerhouse Scholastic and Generation Citizen – which has been transforming how civics education is taught by equipping students with the skills needed to solve community problems – to expand the “Action Civics” program to classrooms across the U.S.
With LS&Co.’s support, Scholastic and Generation Citizen worked together to develop a lesson plan and essay contest inspiring students to take civics into the real world. The “What Will You Run For?” contest, which launched this month, asks students to pen a persuasive essay on how they would tackle a community issue if they ran for office. Winners will receive a $1,000 grant and new laptop to lead the change they envision.
This is the next chapter in our collaboration with Scholastic to provide educational resources on issues we think are important. Last year, LS&Co. sponsored “Civics IRL (in real life),” a new campaign designed to educate middle and high school students about civic engagement and the power of active citizenship. And in 2017, we designed “Our Watery World” curriculum with Scholastic and Project WET to help 3.5 million students understand the value of water and inspire conservation efforts.
We’ve witnessed countless young people – from climate champions to LGBTQ advocates – standing up for their beliefs this past year alone. By teaming up with Scholastic and Generation Citizen, we hope to continue empowering the next generation of changemakers and ultimately strengthen our American democracy.
It’s never too early to fight for the future you want. Share the contest with the teachers and students in your life!
