“Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving.” – Madeleine L’Engle
Here at Levi Strauss, we understand the power of story. More than a century ago, our founder Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis invented what we now know as the blue jean by applying copper rivets to points of strain on denim workpants. We have been making world-renowned denim and non-denim products ever since.
The Levi Strauss & Co. story is embedded into the very clothes we create. From helping to rebuild San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906, to tailoring the first women’s pair of jeans, to supporting HIV/AIDS education around the world, our company story is one of responsible and sustainable business practices, compassionate employees and an unwavering commitment to authenticity.
And our story is just beginning.
Welcome to the brand new redesign of Unzipped. Here, you can witness the Levi Strauss & Co. story as it unfolds via company initiative profiles, interviews with hardworking employees and a closer look at the industry from the inside. Each week, you’ll find stories about topics ranging from sustainability, culture, design, social progress, our company history and technology.
We encourage you to take a look around and get a closer glimpse into the work we do and love. You can find a Q&A with a sustainable cotton-farming planner, a look at the art of music curation for Levi’s stores and a profile of our employees’ volunteer work. And of course, we’ll continue to provide an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at exciting news happening across Levi Strauss & Co. and at our iconic brands: Levi’s, Dockers, dENiZEN and Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.
But perhaps there’s no better person to kick off our new site than our Resident Historian, Lynn Downey. She knows firsthand how important the Levi Strauss & Co. story is—and how our storied past can only inform the exciting moments yet to come.
