In 1984, Levi Strauss & Co. sold its Andes business to The Jeans Company (TJC), a move it would reverse 34 years later.
In 2019, LS&Co. re-acquired TJC and its employees based in Bolivia, Chile and Perú — including Rosa Garcia, who started out as an LS&Co. employee before the 1984 sale and now finds herself back with us. We caught up with Rosa to discover how she first began with LS&Co., her journey along the way and why she’s excited for the future as an LS&Co. employee.

When did you first join LS&Co., and how did you get started at the company?

I initially arrived at LS&Co. when the head of finance, a close friend in my professional network, reached out. He and I worked together at a prior company — he knew me pretty well and my working style.
I started working at LS&Co. in 1984, the same year TJC took over from LS&Co. A lot of people didn’t want to stay and ended up leaving once the change in ownership was finalized. But TJC wanted to keep me in the Treasurer role, which I have maintained and managed to present day. I’ve spent 50 years working in Treasury, I started at age 17 and it is something I enjoy very much.

Pero TJC quería mantenerme en el papel de Tesorero, que he mantenido y logrado hasta el día de hoy. Como tesorera he trabajado por 50 años, empecé a los 17 años y es algo que sin duda disfruto muchísimo.
What was it like to learn that your group was being sold to The Jeans Company back in 1984, and what was that transition like?
¿Cómo fue saber que tu grupo fue vendido a The Jeans Company en 1984 y cómo fue esa transición?
The transition for me was natural given I had only been with LS&Co. for such a brief period of time and I knew going in that new ownership was near. The change was in many ways quite profound because we went from being part of a multinational organization to a family-run business even though TJC pushed to preserve many of the same benefits that LS&Co. provided at that time — culture change essentially drove the transition.
Fue natural para mí porque yo llevaba muy poco tiempo en LS&Co. y llegué sabiendo que llegarían otros dueños. El cambio de todas formas fue bastante profundo porque pasamos de ser una empresa multinacional a una empresa familiar, a pesar de que tomaron los mismos beneficios que tenía LS&Co. en ese tiempo.
How does it feel to now be back at LS&Co.?
¿Cómo te sientes trabajando para LS&Co. nuevamente después de tantos años?
Extremely happy, it has been a complete 180 in the most positive way for me. In the last few months, I’ve been able to realize what it’s like to work for LS&Co. and appreciate all the benefits that come with such a reputable company.

What’s your trick for being successful professionally at both LS&Co. and TJC?

Regarding my workstyle, I’m a trustworthy person who values transparent and direct communication. I put loyalty to the company’s values first.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to other employees just starting their careers?

Being conscious and aware what success at work really entails — learning how to work effectively as a team and valuing what you have. It is important to realize when good opportunities present themselves in life and discern when to appreciate and take advantage to move yourself forward.
Que sean conscientes con su trabajo, sepan trabajar en equipo y valoren lo que tienen. Es clave darse cuenta de las oportunidades que entrega la vida y aprovecharlas al máximo.
What’s your all-time favorite denim product?
¿Tienes algun producto de jean favorito?
Generally, I only wear jeans in our winter because in the summer it is just too hot to wear them. However, the jeans I truly love are the 314s because they’re super comfortable and very elegant.
En general uso jeans sólo invierno porque en verano me da mucho calor. El jeans que me encanta es el 314 que es cómodo y sentador.
