Did you know that the best way to care for your denim is also the most environmentally friendly? In short, skip the washer and dryer routine.

Take it from Levi Strauss & Co. CEO Chip Bergh, who famously hasn’t washed his 501® jeans in 10 years.

“If you talk to real denim aficionados, they will all agree you should never put a pair of jeans in the washing machine,” Chip recently told CNN. “So, I spot clean my jeans when they need to be washed. Worst case, I’ll hand wash them.

“I love my jeans and I take good care of them,” Chip said.

We are all about practicing different methods to do right by the planet, from stepping up as fashion industry leader in the fight against climate change to this week’s launch of the Levi’s® brand’s partnership with Cotton Incorporated’s Blue Jeans Go Green™  denim recycling program.

Of course, a best practice would be partaking in green laundry practices that extend the life of your Levi’s® jeans. In honor of Earth Day this week, read what our experts had to say for this handy tip sheet published by Bustle.
